A Legacy in Harmony

Albie, professor of bassoon at ASU since 2006, has spent nearly two decades mentoring students not only in music performance but also in craftsmanship, teaching reed-making and building a tight-knit studio community. His partner Gregory, a seasoned philanthropy executive, served as a VP of Development at the ASU Foundation. Together, they've made ASU their home and their mission.
Recognizing the financial challenges facing students in the arts and the benefits of advantageous structuring, Albie and Gregory funded a Charitable Remainder Unitrust to endow a scholarship for bassoonists. Their goal: to ensure ASU's School of Music remains competitive in recruiting top talent, regardless of financial background
"We wanted to do something meaningful while we're still here to see the impact," says Gregory.
"This scholarship isn't just about helping one student-it's about strengthening the entire department."
Their gift is both strategic and heartfelt. It sidesteps capital gains taxes, provides a charitable deduction, and creates a steady income stream-funds they often redirect back to ASU. More importantly, it reflects their belief in ASU's mission of access, inclusion, and excellence.
Albie adds, "I get to see the students grow, perform, and thrive. This scholarship is just an extension of that joy." Their story is a testament to the power of giving back and the harmony that comes from investing in the future of the arts.
